I've been attempting to get Beta 2 installed on the following machine:
P4 3.2ghz 160gb HD, two partitions(90gb is the one that I'm attempting to put this on, the other partition is a NTFS partition with just backup data) 1gb RAM(2 512 sticks) ATI Radeon 9800 128mb card(A bit dated, but suspect should still run) 4x DVD drive, cannot recall the model
I have tried with both upgrading from XP Pro XP2 and straight from the CD on bootup. On the bootup, I get the background and my mouse pointer, and then after about 30 seconds, it locks up and I must reboot. When doing the upgrade, it copies over all of the files fine, expands them, and then on reboot, it does the same thing. I cannot even get a menu up on the reboot.
Any thoughts? Thanks

Another Install Problem
And just a quick follow up. I attempted again with the upgrade method. When it rebooted, it came up to the "Installing Windows" screen. It goes for about a minute, locks up, and then reboots. Then it goes to the "Windows Setup Rollback" menu.
I've tried this in safe mode as well on the setup.

If you can still get back to XP:
Do the install again (full or upgrade), be there when it locks/reboots and do not allow it to boot back to the setup after the blue screen, but instead:
1. boot back to previous os, (may need to press f8 during the boot to force it to xp) 2. change folder options to make hidden folders visible before the search. 3. search all partitions, including the Vista one** if it was created during the setup (it may not be visible! * -> diskmgmt.msc -> assign drive letter) for .log files. Submit these logs to microsoft using Beta Client.
*If there was no vista partition in diskmgmt.msc: There should be a hidden, weird named folder, in the root of the XP drive and the setup logs are somewhere under there (search ..log .txt).
**If setup proceeded far enough for the Vista partition to appear, you may need to assign it a drive letter, the logs are under Vistas Windows\INF

Your advice led me to the right place. I read the log files, found some of the drivers that it wasn't installing. So I ended up stripping my system down to the bare bones, but it still wouldn't install.
Looked at the log again, found an "unknown device package" and realized it was my Samsung i730 phone that was plugged in via USB that was on the cradle. Removed it from the cradle, reinstalled via bootup, installed flawlessly. I sent the log anyway so that they had it.
Thanks for the help! I'm playing around with Vista now.
